Title: Usefulness of European Tree Species as Urban Health Indicators

Keynote Speaker

Dr. Edina Simon

University of Debrecen, Hungary

Abstract

Air pollution is an increasing problem worldwide. While in Europe air pollution decreases, it is still a problem, especially in cities. Trees leaves can accumulate metals and other pollutants in high quantities. The tolerance and sensitivity vary among species. Accordingly, we aimed to analyse the sensitivity of frequent European tree species to air pollution based on the PM10 amount, APTI, and metal concentration of tree leaves in Debrecen (Hungary) and in Vienna (Austria). The amount of dust was measured using the gravimetric method. APTI values were calculated based on the ascorbic acid content in mg g-1, total chlorophyll content in mg g-1, pH of leaf extract, and relative water content of the tree leaves. Inductively coupled plasma optical
emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) was used during the elemental analysis of leaf samples. Based on the APTI, A. saccharinum and P. acerifolia, and based on the PM10, A. saccharinum and B. pendula from Hungary. While, especially other species, such as R. pseudoacacia, T. × europaea, A. platanoides, F. excelsior, B. pendula, and C. occidentalis from Hungary and Acer platanoides, F. excelsior and Q. robur from Austria with lower APTI values, are useful bioindicators of air pollution and proxies of urban health beacuse of they are sensivitve to pollution. We found that tree leaves are reliable bioindicators of urban air pollution. APTI is useful in selecting pollution-tolerant species and can be used for urban green infrastructure planning in the phase of species selection.

Title: The role of the Agricultural Engineer as a cultural editor in the longevity of a society: Agrobiotechnological experiences that have been obtained in some of the deserts and arid areas of the world

Keynote Speaker

Dr. Edgar Omar Rueda Puente

National System of Researchers, Mexico

Abstract

The editor communicates, transforms and conceives a text as a finished product, organized according to technical needs and the market. Its purpose is the transmission of a cultural product that goes from authorial creation to the appropriation of the content by the reader. Agronomy as a branch of engineering covers three central aspects of agronomy: agriculture, livestock and technology. Within the wide range of activities that an agronomist carries out, in essence it is about improving agronomic production, managing its production and avoiding negative repercussions on the environment. This presentation will be focusing on the potential of halophytes for food, fodder and biofuels production, as well as their impacts on the environment and societies. Furthermore, to open new areas in production systems using novel technologies such as halophytes in a desert agriculture.
