Title: The Science of Aromatherapy and Touch massage in dementia

Plenary Speaker

Dr. Steve John Chiola

Abstract

The progressive nature of the disease demandscontinuous adaptation from caregivers who must manage not only physical health needs but also emotional and psychological well-being.

Caregivers oftenface stress and burnout due to the demanding natureof their role. Moreover, patients may experience agitation or depression as they grapple with their diminishing capabilities. Understanding these aspects of dementia is crucial for developing effectivecare strategies that enhance quality of life for both patients and their caregivers.

The Role Of EssentialOils In Health And Well-Being

When inhaled, essential oils stimulate the olfactory system, which is directly connected to the brain's limbic system—an area involved in emotion, memory, and behavior. This connection explains why certain scents can trigger emotional responses or evoke memories. For instance, lavender oil is often used to promoterelaxation and alleviate anxiety, while peppermint oil can invigorate the senses and improve focus.

Incorporating essential oils into daily clinicalroutines can play a significant role in enhancing overall healthand well-being by addressing both physical ailmentsand emotional imbalances.

Therapeutic Benefits Of Touch Massage For Dementia Patients

One of the primaryadvantages of touchmassage is its ability to reduce agitationand anxiety, common symptoms in those with dementia. Through the soothing strokes and rhythmic movements, patients often experience a calming effect that helps mitigate restlessness and promotes a sense of tranquility. This relaxation response is attributed to the release of endorphins, which are natural painkillers and mood enhancers.

The emotional connection fostered through touch should not be underestimated. It provides a non-verbal means of communication that reinforces feelingsof being cared for and understood. In an environment where verbal communication can be challenging due to cognitive decline, touch massage offers an invaluable avenue for expressing empathy and building trust.

How Essential Oils Can Enhance Touch Massage Therapies

Essential oils have gained substantial attentionfor their potentialtherapeutic benefits, especially when integrated into touch massage therapies aimed at alleviating symptoms of dementia. The aromatic compounds found in essential oils such as lavender, rosemary, and bergamot can play a crucial role in enhancing the overall sensory experience during massage sessions. These oils can be absorbed through the skin and inhaled, impacting both the physical and emotional well-being of individuals with dementia.

The calming properties of essential oils like lavender can help reduce agitation and anxiety, common symptoms in dementia patients. When used in conjunction with gentle touch massage, these oils can promote relaxation and foster a sense of safetyand comfort. For example, applying

diluted lavenderoil during a hand or foot massagecan create a soothing atmosphere that helps lower stress levels.

In essence, combining essential oils with touchmassage therapies offersa multifaceted approach to care that addresses both psychological and physiological aspects of dementia, creating an enriched therapeutic experience.

Title: Medicinal mushrooms are immune system boosters

Plenary Speaker

Dr. Kevin KF Ng

Food as Medicine Consultants
USA

Abstract

Mushrooms, known for their culinary versatility, are increasingly recognized for their medicinal properties, particularly in boosting the immune system. These fungi offer a rich source of compounds such as beta-glucans, antioxidants, and adaptogens, which play pivotal roles in supporting immune health. Beta-glucans, found abundantly in varieties like shiitake and maitake, stimulate immune activity by enhancing the function of macrophages, key immune cells responsible for engulfing and destroying pathogens.

Moreover, mushrooms are packed with antioxidants like selenium, vitamin D, and polyphenols, which combat oxidative stress and inflammation, thereby bolstering immune function. Certain mushrooms, such as reishi and cordyceps, exhibit adaptogenic effects, aiding the body in adapting to stressors and fortifying immune resilience.

Clinical evidence underscores the immune-boosting potential of mushrooms, with studies indicating a reduced risk of infections and enhanced immune function with regular consumption. Incorporating mushrooms into daily meals offers a practical means to harness their immune-boosting benefits. Whether added to soups, stir-fries, salads, coffee or tea, mushrooms provide versatility and nutritional diversity.

Mushrooms stand as natural allies in supporting immune health. Their diverse array of beneficial compounds, ranging from beta-glucans to antioxidants and adaptogens, highlights their potential to strengthen the body's defense mechanisms. By integrating mushrooms into one's diet, individuals can fortify their immune response, promote resilience, and safeguard overall well-being. Embracing the immune-boosting power of mushrooms offers a holistic approach to health and wellness.

Title: The place of Misteltoe (Viscum album) in cancerology

Plenary Speaker

Dr. Robert Kempenich

President of AREMA
France

Abstract

More and more cancer patients are turning to integrative medicine. In Europe, more than 40% of these patients (between 15% and 70%) use one or other form of integrative medicine, primarily phytotherapy, including Viscum album (mistletoe). In France, this figure rises to 60% of patients. In oncology, Viscum album is the most widely prescribed treatment in Central Europe : either on its own, for primary or secondary prevention, or as a support treatment to accompany chemotherapy, radiotherapy, hormone therapy or monoclonal antibodies, etc.

Viscum album is therefore a fundamental therapeutic element in integrative oncology (a concept that brings together conventional and complementary medicine in a single therapeutic approach).

Mistletoe is an ancient medicinal plant.

In Greek mythology, Hermes and Ixion used oak mistletoe to treat illnesses. In the 1st century, Celsus and later Dioscoride attributed to mistletoe the power to cure tumours.

In ancient Rome, according to Pline the Old, mistletoe was used to cure illnesses whose origin seemed mysterious (epilepsy, high blood pressure and cerebrovascular accidents, for example), and a little bit later to treat osteoarthritis...

In Nordic and Celtic mythology in particular, mistletoe became a symbol of spiritual evolution. Paracelsus also mentioned mistletoe in the treatment of epilepsy.

As early as 1920, Rudolf Steiner, the founder of anthroposophical medicine, indicated Viscum album in the treatment of cancer.

Doctors Ita Wegman in Arlesheim (Switzerland) and Ludwig Noll in Stuttgart (Germany) were the first doctors to apply this indication.

Since that time, the quality of Viscum album preparations and clinical practice have evolved considerably. Pre-clinical and clinical research began to develop in the 1960s and intensified considerably from 1980 onwards.

Biography

Robert Kempenich is a medical doctor ( Université de Strasbourg. Title: The Sound of Healing: Retuning the Soundtrack of Trauma

Speaker

Kathy Blough

Mind Body & Energy Medicine Coach
USA

Abstract

Since ancient times, humans across cultures have utilized the profound power of sound and vibration for healing, spirituality, and connection. Sound and vibration permeates all life - from the natural world to the vibrational hum within our cells and atoms.

While the breadth of sound's influence spans globally, its depth extends to the quantum realm where subatomic particles spin in vibratory motions. Our body is surrounded by a measurable biofield filled with waves and frequencies (energy) emanating from the body. Trauma and adverse life experiences, impacts the quality of the waves and the movement of the energy through the bodily system and the surrounding biofield.

Integrating modalities like sound and vibration with psychology and energy work allows us to retune and harmonize the incoherent vibrations caused by trauma. This facilitates mind-body-spirit coherence and wholeness by realigning us with the fundamental resonance pulsating through all existence. Honoring sound's ancient wisdom while grounded in modern science opens doorways to holistic healing - reuniting humanity with the symphonic cosmos through the universal language of vibration.

Solihin Thom

Title: An ontological approach to illness, health and wellness.

Keynote Speaker

Solihin Thom

USA

Abstract

Solihin Thom DO (UK) DAc (SL) ret. will present an ontological consideration (the study of being) of a model of the fivefold expression of humans and the virtues and qualities contingent on true health and well-being. The participants will take away the essential non-therapeutic understanding of the qualities that act as preventative medicine. This understanding underpins the work of Inner Dialogue and the constellation Human Template Model that he has developed and teaches every year.

Biography

Solihin Thom obtained his diploma in osteopathy from the British School of Osteopathy in 1980. He further studied acupuncture at the Institute of Acupuncture under the tutelage of Dr Anton Jayasuriya of Medicina Alternativa in Columbo, Sri Lanka, in 1982. Clinical education of kinesiology and manual muscle testing with Dr Bandy, and Dr Alan Beardall et al, throughout the mid-eighties, as well as perfecting Cranial osteopathic studies under the annual tutelage of the Cranial Academy and the Sutherland Teaching Foundation in the UK and various American luminaries in the osteopathic world. Solihin practised in London primarily as a cranial osteopath in his multidisciplinary Fulham Clinic until 1991, when he emigrated to the US and started teaching an ontological alternative model of health. He has taught over the last thirty-five years in the US, Canada, New Zealand, UK, Russia, and Austria. During those years, he occasionally presented at the annual Cranial Academy conferences and other Alternative Health Forums. This work has informed him over the years, and he is still teaching, albeit sporadically, in Austria, Türkiye and the US. The work looks at the inner state of humans and our often vain attempts to mirror this hierarchical arrangement of the inner selves. When disorganised, the whole of the organism – constitutional, physiological, behavioural and mental as well as spiritual, becomes dysfunctional, pathophysiological, pathological and psychotic states, and ultimately sick. Solihin Thom's work is distinguished by its use of over 1500 mudras and other symbolic modalities as a language. This unique approach, mediated through a specific ontological approach in kinesiology, serves as a feedback tool to elicit the narrative(s) carried by clients. By activating the narrative within the person, the dynamics of the organism are changed, leading it back to well-being and health or preparing the human, ultimately, for death.

Abstract

Here I want to describe a case of 36 years old woman. For many years, she sufferred from confusion of personal identity, depressions despite using antidepressants, painful menstruations, migraine and generally low life energy. Furthermore, she strongly felt she does not belong to her body or even human race – basically as an alien in some foreign body.

Used methodology: I followed Rajan Sankaran’s method of going into the depths of patient soul with repertorization using Radar Opus, Synthesis Adonis software. Plant remedies were selected based on Michal Yakir‘s Systematic Table of Homeopathic Plant Remedies.

Used remedies: during the two-year treatment period, the following remedies were applied one after another: Spectrum, Falco peregrinus, Lac humanum, Anacardium, Haliaeetus leucocephalus, Theridion curassavicum, Natrium causticum, Nux vomica, Aurum metallicum.

Each of them had a deep impact on the patient and improved her health. In the end of the treatment, she felt fully comfortable in her body and she was no longer suffering from aforementioned symptoms even without antidepressants. Her life energy significantly rised and she was finally able to have a child.

This was just yet another success story which confirms homeopathy as a very powerful tool capable of healing really deep injuries of the soul and bringing patients back to their wellbeing and life balance. It is incredible how such tiny remedie can cause such a huge positive change in our patients life.

Abstract

The current studies were focused on the phytochemical profiling of two local wild Artemisia species, Artemisia scoparia and Artemisia absinthium leaves’ essential oils, extracted via the hydro distillation method along with evaluation of their antioxidant as well as antimicrobial effects. The constituents of EOs were identified using a combined gas chromatography-mass spectrometric (GC-MS) technique. A total of 25 compounds in A. scoparia essential oil (EOAS) were identified, and 14 compounds with percentage abundance of >1% were tabulated, the major being tocopherol derivatives (47.55%). A total of nine compounds in Artemisia absinthium essential oil (EOAA) were enlisted (% age > 1%), the majority being oleic acid derivatives (41.45%). Strong antioxidant effects were pronounced by the EOAS in DPPH (IC50 = 285 ± 0.82 µg/mL) and in ABTS (IC50 = 295 ± 0.32 µg/mL) free radical scavenging assays. Both the EOs remained potent in inhibiting the growth of bacterial species; Escherichia coli (55–70%) and Shigella flexneri (60–75%) however remained moderately effective against Bacillus subtilis as well as Staphylococcus aureus. Both EOAS and EOAA strongly inhibited the growth of the tested fungal species, especially Aspergillus species (up to 70%). The oils showed anti-cholinesterase potential by inhibiting both Acetylcholinesterase (AChE; IC50 = 30 ± 0.04 µg/mL (EOAS), 32 ± 0.05 µg/mL (EOAA) and Butyrylcholinesterase (BChE; IC50 = 34 ± 0.07 µg/mL (EOAS), 36 ± 0.03 µg/mL (EOAA). In conclusion, the essential oils of A. scoparia and A. absinthium are promising antioxidant, antimicrobial and anticholinergic agents with a different phytochemical composition herein reported for the first time.

Abstract

Chronic diseases, specifically autoimmune disorders, take an enormous physical, psychological, and financial toll on patients, families, and the healthcare system. Mainstream biomedicine offers limited solutions outside of pharmacological interventions. Mind–Body Medicine (MBM) lifestyle intervention strategies offer low-cost, low-risk options to reducing stress and managing health. This study, conducted as part of my doctoral research, analyzed the effects of relaxation strategies on immune function, mood, and heart rate variability in adult women diagnosed with thyroid diseases. This quasi-experimental study measured the effects of diaphragmatic breathing (DB) and guided imagery (GI) in a small convenience sample of 15 participants. Pre- and post-intervention data were collected on (a) heart rate variability, (b) mood using the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS), and (c) immune response with salivary interleukin-1beta (IL-1β). Within subject data from Wilcoxon signed rank tests showed both interventions significantly decreased negative mood (DB, p = .02; GI, p = .01). In contrast, only the DB group showed significant changes in HRV (SDNN, p = .02; RMSSD, p = .04; pNN50, p = .05; LF (n.u.), p = .04). Interestingly, the IL-1β results for both interventions showed an unexpected increase, with the GI group showing statistical significance (p = .05), highlighting the need for further research to better understand the mind’s impact on and the role of this inflammatory cytokine in healing. This study served as my springboard in creating an integrative mental health model of care utilizing MBM and lifestyle interventions to promote self-regulation as a means to optimize health for those with early chilhood trauma and chronic medical conditions.

Abstract

This paper describes the preparation, characterization, and evaluation of honey/ tripolyphosphate (TPP)/chitosan (HTCs) nanofibers loaded with capsaicin derived from the natural extract of hot pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) and loaded with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) as biocompatible antimicrobial nanofibrous wound bandages in topical skin treatments. The capsaicin and AuNPs were packed within HTCs in HTCs-capsaicin, HTCs-AuNP, and HTCs-AuNPs/capsaicin nanofibrous mats. In vitro antibacterial testing against Pasteurella multocida, Klebsiella rhinoscleromatis, Staphylococcus pyogenes, and Vibrio vulnificus was conducted in comparison with difloxacin and chloramphenicol antibiotics. Cell viability and proliferation of the developed nanofibers were evaluated using an MTT assay. Finally, in vivo study of the wound-closure process was performed on New Zealand white rabbits. The results indicate that HTCs-capsaicin and HTCs-AuNPs are suitable in inhibiting bacterial growth compared with HTCs and HTCs-capsaicin/AuNP nanofibers and antibiotics(P<0.01). The MTT assay demonstrates that the nanofibrous mats increased cell proliferation compared with the untreated control (P<0.01). In vivo results show that the developed mats enhanced the wound-closure rate more effectively than the control samples. The novel nanofibrous wound dressings provide a relatively rapid and efficacious wound-healing ability, making the obtained nanofibers promising candidates for the development of improved bandage materials.

Recall Healing (RH) is a therapeutic approach that explores the link between unresolved emotional conflicts and physical health issues. This presentation aims to provide an overview of Recall Healing, illustrating its principles, methods, and applications in clinical settings.  RH posits that physical symptoms are often manifestations of unresolved emotional conflicts, both from the individual's past and inherited from previous generations. By identifying and resolving these conflicts, individuals can potentially alleviate or even resolve their physical ailments. The process involves a thorough exploration of personal and family history to uncover subconscious patterns and conflicts that may contribute to illness.  During this presentation, attendees will gain insights into the foundations of RH, including methodology, clinical application, challenges and considerations.  The presentation will conclude with a Q&A session, allowing attendees to engage in a discussion about the practical aspects of RH and its potential benefits for enhancing patient care.  Healthcare professionals, therapists, and holistic practitioners will be equipped with a deeper understanding of RH and its role in uncovering the emotional roots of physical symptoms, paving the way for more comprehensive and effective treatment strategies.

Title: Apitherapy in pediatrics and integrated support plan for autistic children

Abstract

Apitherapy is a method of treating various human diseases using bees and bee products.
Apitherapy is one of the oldest methods of treatment; it existed even under King Salamon.
Apitherapy includes apitoxin therapy or apyreflexotherapy, which is a therapeutic method based on the use of bee venom. Apiair therapy is a treatment by inhaling vapors from a beehive.

Today, apitherapy is a step aimed at restoring lost health, prolonging life and improving its quality;
Bees, in fact, a disposable syringe - very effective and absolutely safe because when a bee stings, its needle gets stuck in the body of the stung person and the bee dies. Therefore, the disease of a person stung by a bee is not transmitted to another person.

Bee venom is a complex natural medicine, the analogues of which have not yet been created by man!

Clinical apitherapy – a new direction of medicine and its new opportunities. The influence of bee products is especially effective in diagnosing autism spectrum disorders. In pediatrics and integrated support plan for autistic children we are using bee products are strong antioxidants, very rich in polyphenolic substances, in particular flavonoids, phenolic acids and vitamins.

They cleanse the body, strengthen the immune system, have an anti-inflammatory effect, and regenerate cells.

The bee products included in apitherapy will be discussed in my presentation. Currently, apitherapy includes 12 products that we can use from the beehive: Honey, pollen, beebread, propolis, royal jelly, drone homogenate, apitoxin, wax moth, chitosan, wax, beetherapy house, beehive hydrogen water

We know from our own experience that bee products can relieve a wide range of digestive problems. In our Apitherapy center in Estonia, we saw that bee products can alleviate a wide range of digestive problems for children.

For children with ASD, we address all four of the most important areas: parasite, virus, and yeast elimination, detoxification, probiotic supplementation, and rich nutrition. We allow ourselves to assert that nature does not know a greater enemy of parasites, viruses and yeast in one person than propolis.

Bee products are a very good helper for health problems, but it is important to know where you buy the products and who recommends the dosage for you so as not to harm yourself. For this reason, we recommend purchasing and using bee products only from a trusted seller and consulting with an apitherapist on this issue.

We produce our own bee products that we use in Honey Wolf Apitherapy center in Estonia. Honey Wolf is the family apiary and his method of processing bee colonies are at the very beginning of the chain of creating truly pure and beneficial bee products, which can then be accepted by even very sensitive organisms. With Honey Wolf Apitherapy center we create a vision of Healthy bees = healthy bee products = healthy people.

Abstract

Quantum medicine is a special holistic and therapeutic procedure, which started a new direction in medicine, with the aim of helping patients quickly and efficiently. It follows the individual on all levels: physical, mental, emotional.

The quantum medicine supports the healthy frequencies of our body, while simultaneously relieving the body of pathogenic frequencies and their negative influences. It is useful in diagnostics, therapy and preventive measures to improve health and quality of life. Some experts say quantum medicine is the medicine of the future...some say it's the medicine of the present. It is important to me that it is safe for patients and that it can bring improvements in many conditions and diseases, and not infrequently indicate diseases that may occur in the future and therefore prevent them.

In quantum medicine, an important discovery is used, which is the fact that cells communicate with each other through certain wavelengths (frequencies).

The human body emits various electromagnetic oscillations. Cells, tissues and organs each have their own specific oscillations. These individual oscillations are mutually correlated and influence each other. Together they create the patient's overall oscillatory spectrum, a unique frequency record. When this form of communication is not interrupted by a disturbing frequency, the person is considered healthy.

Viruses, bacteria, toxins...also have their own frequencies. When our immune response is weakened, these pathogenic frequencies interfere with communication between cells. The combination of toxins, environmental pollutants, emotional and other factors burden the body's natural self-healing mechanism, which can lead to ailments and disease states.

By using quantum medicine, the real, often hidden causes of the disease can be discovered in many cases. Many conditions can be effectively treated by relieving the body of various burdens such as blockages, intolerances, toxins... thus stimulating the body's self-healing powers on a frequency level, which in most cases leads to healing.

The WHO issued the First Strategy for the Development of Complementary Medicine for the period 2005 to 2014 and the Second 2014-2023, which emphasized that each country, a member of the WHO, should develop this area according to its specific conditions. Quantum medicine is used in many countries worldwide. The first research was done in the last century.

Title: TCM Integrated Medicine for the Treatment of Obesity and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM)

Keynote Speaker

Louise Josephine Farrell

Wrexham Glyndwr University
United Kingdom

Abstract

Louise Farrell, qualified with a BSc (Hons) Degree in Acupuncture. She is accredited with The Association of Traditional Chinese Medicine (ATCM). She is learning to speak the Korean language and is looking to expand her curriculum through the study of Chinese Herbal Medicine and Korean Hand Acupuncture, Lymphatic Drainage and Tui Na.

Louise has treated a wide range of ailments successfully. She has had excellent results with treating carpel tunnel syndrome, neck, back and shoulder pain, muscle injury with associated pain due to qi and blood stagnation, kidney qi xu, spleen qi xu, excess liver yang and stagnation; arthritic conditions, including fibromyalgia.

Louise is currently researching the effects of Tang Niao-Bing, (sugar urine illness) due to the link between the rapid increase of mental health conditions and such as dementia, ADHD and Autism Spectrum Disorder, Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and Obesity.

Biography

There are different schools of thought upon the patterns of this modern syndrome and the expected patterns for T2DM and Covington, (2001) remarks that not all patients will present with all symptoms, particularly in the early stages of onset. Whilst T2DM is predominantly a yin xu syndrome, the yang overconsumes due to a weakened yin and can ultimately present with a mixed pattern. Therefore, it may be described as a cyclical process, it is essential therefore, to balance both elements to achieve equilibrium. Dry Heat or Excess Yang is the main cause of Yin Xu. An excess of liver fire dries up the lung fluid. Therefore, when dry heat consumes Lung fluid, this generates Lung fire, which presents a dry mouth, throat and sometimes a dry hoarse cough may occur. A seemingly unquenchable or excessive thirst arises, resulting in the consumption of large quantities of water. In addition to a dry mouth and throat, depleted body fluids may also present as dry skin, dry eyes, i.e., depleted lacrimation, cracked lips, and brittle nails. Tongue Observation Pulse Observation Red with Yellow Coating Floating and Rapid (Choate, 2017) It is now widely acknowledged in modern TCM theory that the modern human diet has undergone extraordinary changes in recent years, and it has been noticed that the previous TCM theory is no longer tailored to exactly fit the diagnosis of Xiaoke. It was noted by both TCM and Western Medicine, that mature onset diabetes has a direct correlation with obesity due to the westernised carbohydrate heavy diet and no amount of modern medicine or recommendations of dietary changes from dieticians and nutritionists, where the diet is tailored specifically for type 2 diabetic patients, can combat this spiralling excess pattern.
